Some people claim security cameras will significantly reduce crimes against your home. However, there are some people who claim they offer no protection at all. The purpose of this article is to separate fact from fiction so homeowners can make the best decision on how to protect their homes and property.

Most studies indicate that the protection security cameras provide depends on the punishment perpetrators will receive if they are caught. If the crime warrants long prison terms, security cameras offer good protection. If the punishment amounts to a slap on the wrist, criminals may not pay security cameras much attention.

On the other hand, professional security monitoring companies offer crime protection by monitoring your home with motion sensors, and door and window breach monitors which alert them when someone enters your home. They also offer fire and carbon monoxide detection services. However, the monthly subscription charges might not be worth the investment, depending on the crime rate in your area.

If the crime rate in your area is high, these professional services do offer good protection. Since these companies are alerted as the crime is occurring, there's a good chance that police can respond in time to catch criminals in the act. But if the perpetrators are long gone by the time police arrive, identifying the responsible persons can be a challenge.

On the other hand, if the crime rate in your area is not so high, security cameras might be a better option. There are several advantages to surveilling your home with security cameras:

- The presence of security cameras can help deter crime

- The recorded images from security cameras can lead to the identification of perpetrators

- Possible recovery of stolen items when the perpetrators are caught

- The security camera images can help to identify stolen property

- The images recorded from security cameras can serve as court evidence

Obviously, the best protection most homeowners could provide would be to hire a professional monitoring service, and blend that with the added protection security cameras offer. With today's rising prices, even this might not be an option for most homeowners. So the installation of security cameras is a decent option. While they might not completely protect your home, they still offer good protection benefits.
