Most individuals tend to ignore or neglect dirt that accumulates in areas that are not visible, and only wake up when something goes wrong. Every machine needs to be cleaned once in a while to keep it running smoothly and to prolong its life. This is especially true regarding dryers since the dryer vents are more often that not, left filled with lint. Not only can this affect the dryer, but it is a serious fire hazard as well. Many home fires are started by dryers, and the main culprit is usually the lint that has gathered within the vents over time.

Every dryer has a lint trap that is designed to catch the lint that comes off the clothing in the dryer, but it is usually not sufficient. In order to ensure that the dryer continues to work properly and more importantly that a fire does not break out, the dryer vents need to be cleaned out a couple of times a year. One of the signs that may indicate that your vent is clogged with lint is when your dryer takes a bit longer to dry the clothes. This would be an appropriate time to inspect your vent and give it a thorough cleaning. Even if your dryer is working just fine, biyearly inspections are highly recommended in order to prevent fires and to protect your family and your home. It would be wise to mark off on your calendars two days on which you will make certain to clean out the dryer vents.

Upon cleaning your dryer vents, you will need to remove the dryer duct, which is the large tube on the outside connected to the dryer. Any lint that is trapped inside the hole needs to be cleaned, as well as the entire length of the duct tube that leads outdoors. Tools for cleaning the dyer vent and the duct tube can be bought at your local home improvement store. You can purchase a cleaning kit, which is intended for such purposes. Generally the dryer vent cleaners come with a long tube made from metal and a nylon brush that is attached at the end.

The tool is inserted into the length of the duct tube and it can be cleaned in this way. The nylon brush runs against the interior of the tube, removing any lint that is stuck inside. If you happen to have an extra long tube, there are professional cleaning kits that will assist you in completing the job efficiently. Cleaning your dryer vents is a job that practically anyone can do. It is fairly simple and only needs to be done every so often. Nevertheless, if you would prefer someone else to get it done for you, this is a possibility as well.

This rather small task of cleaning your dryer vents can have serious and permanent effects on your life, your family, your home, and your dryer so it would be wise to make it part of your yearly routine. All it takes is a couple of hours of your time, twice a year, and you will not only be protecting your fail from a potential fire, but will be extending the life of your dryer at the same time.
