With today's tight market making it more difficult than ever to afford top talent, smart companies are seeing internships as a way to grow their workforce.According to Dave Bracken, the author of "How to Get the Internship you Want", "Firms are spending more time and resources to develop internship programs because it provides them with an efficient way to cultivate employees and weed out the undesirables".
Internships were once seen solely as an opportunity for recent college graduates. However, through out the past year, more and more seasoned employees are seeing internships as a new way to get their foot in the door in a tight labor market.Bruce Turner, a SetFocus Alumnae, had twenty years of programming experience prior to joining SetFocus to upgrade his skills. He says, "Aninternship is a great way for you and a company to "try" each other out. After spending 20 years in the IT industry I've learned that one or two interviews does not allow you to see what a company is really like. After being out of the work force (by choice), I welcomed the opportunity to become an intern. By the end of the three month internship, I knew this is where I wanted to work, and I was offered the opportunity to become a permanent employee. It was a great decision!"
According to national statistics, 46% of permanent hires are due to preprofessional training and internships. (The Center for Professional Excellence). According to SetFocus statistics, 95% of all SetFocus internships have led to permanent positions, hence a high return on investment for the Intern Company and the opportunity for the graduate to secure employment in a difficult market.
SetFocus has placed several graduates with SetFocus Internship Partner companies since the beginning of the year.
A Win - Win Proposition…Robert Scott, a SetFocus graduate, landed an internship in January 2002. Robert is responsible for using his Visual Basic (.NET), and many other components of the Visual Studio suite in developing applications for the web. According to his supervisor, "Robert has met all of his deadlines, and is now working for the company in a permanent position. Hiring him has lead to a positive return on investment, it was money well spent."
Edward Song, a graduate from SetFocus in December of 2001, landed an internship with a Java firm in NYC known as Internet Access Methods. His daily responsibilities consisted of programming projects where he used the Java knowledge that he learned at SetFocus on a daily basis. His supervisor said, "He turned out to be very productive for the company. It was definitely worth it to bring him on to our team."
Innovative Systems and Solutions hired Dave Robles as an intern, after he graduated from the SetFocus program. Dave, still employed by ISS uses his knowledge of Visual Basics on a daily basis. All of the companies that were interviewed said that they would come back to SetFocus for their future employment needs. All of the students that they have hired have proven to be valuable assets to their daily business activities.
How can you become involved and hire a SetFocus Intern?Every quarter 25 – 40 Programmers graduate from SetFocus all intensely trained in either Java or .NET. In an effort to place as many graduates as possible, SetFocus offers a placement plan, in which companies can hire a graduate with no fee.
