A recent study revealed that obesity has become the new global epidemic. According to the new figures Australia alone accounts for a staggering 2.4 million adults who are obese and have a Body Mass Index of 30 or higher. Americans boast of a staggering 37% of the children who are either obese or overweight.

Europeans are not far behind with more than 20% of their young population hitting the obesity region. 290 million Chinese children are reported to be obese and the figure is likely to double in the coming years. All these figures have made the weight loss industry burgeon beyond proportion.

Americans alone spend a whooping 35 billion dollars on an assortment on weight loss products and plans. In spite of the money that is spent on these products literally goes down the drain as the efforts are given up midway or the lost weight is regained as fast as it is lost. The question is do these pills really work?

Is there really a perfect weight loss formula which can help people to lose and keep off the weight? Before we answer these questions let us understand a few basic facts about weight loss. Weight loss is all about input and output balance.

That means that if the calorie intake is less that the calories spend then weight is lost else weight is gained. The other factor which is detrimental is the metabolism of the body. A high metabolism burns fat faster and a low metabolism makes weight gain easier and it is unique to all individuals.

So in another words weight loss is all about a life style change, which includes a combination of right diet and regular exercise. So where do these pills figure in our scheme of things? Diet pills cause you to feel less hungry which induces your body to burn more fat and eat less.

Some pills like Phentermine work as appetite suppressantsand cause a feeling of fullness which makes one eat less. These pills are for those people who are very obese and face a possibility of diseases like diabetes and hypertension due to their obesity. A word of caution: weight loss pills are not magic pills, they can only work in conjunction with a sensible diet and good exercise program and you do need to consult your doctor before taking any of them.
