by Robert Green
Thursday, June 12, 2008

Are you a complete beginner golfer, or have you always wanted to take it up and never really new were to start? Well, whatever your position when it comes to golf, you need to know the basics first and know them well, before you begin to build upon your skills and improve. Learning to play golf from the outset is a very hard task, so learning the basics here will certainly help you on your quest to play better golf.

Firstly before you even attempt to learn to play golf, you should take a while to determine what you would like to learn and how you would like to learn.

A few simple questions that you should ask yourself when beginning to learn to play golf are:-

1) What do you know about golf?

2) What exactly would you like to learn about golf?

3) What type of environment do you seem to learn best in?

4) How much are you willing to spend if anything to learn to play golf?

A place where you should start improving on your golf is with your grip. Your grip is an essential part to your improvement. Without the right grip and grip pressure you will fail to improve on any aspect of your game.

Also, another essential part of learning to play golf is learning to swing the club correctly. A deep understanding of the takeway, downswing, backswing, and follow through are important here.

For many, heading out into the complete unknowns of an 18 hole golf course can be very daunting to say the least. A good knowledge of the attire you need to wear and the etiquette surrounding a golf course can serve to ease the anxiousness of your first game.

You must practice at least 5 times on the driving range before attempting a course, whether it be 9 or an 18 hole course. Practice at every given opportunity as it's a very, very hard sport to succeed at (you don't need me to tell you that!).

Before you head out onto the golf course for the first time with friends at a peak time, you should take time out through the week to play round the course yourself. This will allow you to get a feel of the course and what it's like to play a round on it. Don't bother keeping score while your doing this as it can be very frustrating to say the least, especially on your first round.

After your round you should be more comfortable next time out, so keep practicing the basics and don't complicate the process by involving to harder techniques like the backspin for instance. It's important that you keep
filling your head with as much knowledge on golf as you can so make sure you check out books, dvd's, and websites regularly.

About the Author

Robert is a dedicated golfer and spends most of his spare time playing golf when he's not teaching how to play golf to adults and kids. He has created many golf tips for beginners in his time and he loves teaching golf for beginners.
