by Kate Winnie
Thursday, September 01, 2005

Compulsion refers to the irresistible impulse to act regardless of the rationality of motivation. A casino gambler can be named 'compulsive gambler' if he shows an inability to stop gambling despite consequences. Many studies have been conducted to differentiate a compulsive gambler from a recreational one. Here are a few of them:

· Compulsive gamblers have tolerance. They will not get excited by winning a bet of $100 or $200

· Compulsive gamblers play for a long time

· They are least bothered about anything happening around but stick to their game of gambling in casinos

· Many compulsive gamblers take to drugs or alcohol

Casino critics do not agree to these differentiations. They say that people who come to the casino, gamble and lose 2 million dollars, might come back again because they have the revenues and it needn't be due to their compulsive gambling behavior. Also there has not been any comprehensive research on the traits and behaviors of a compulsive gambler.

Terms like 'problem gambler' or 'pathological gambler' are common in the casino industry [www.ecardscasino.com]. Pathological gambling is an illness. The American Psychiatric society mentions pathological gamblers are people who suffer from depression and get into substance abuse or dependency. Some of them showed personality disorders like paranoia or avoidant behaviors. Rates of sexual abuse were high amongst these people. The psychiatric society reveals that casino goers who have psychiatric and substance abuse disorders are more prone to become pathological gamblers. The National Gambling Effects study Commission in 1999 stated that the majority of Americans who flock to casinos are gambling without any significant problems. Around 85 % of Americans gamble in a given year.

Religious organizations fear that advertising and lottery machines in the neighborhood are influencing people to get addicted to the casino concept. But compulsive addicts will anyway find their way to casinos anywhere. Today, we have little information about the compulsive gambling disorder. And a complete remedy for this behavior disorder is not yet developed. The big question still remains on whether compulsive casino gambling is in fact a disease or irresponsibility.

About the Author

Name: Kate Winnie
Profession: Article Expert
Website: http://www.ecardscasino.com
